| The Kingdom of Spain is a major southwestern European country and an influential member of the international community. With a population of over 49 million, it ranks among the European Union’s largest states geographically and demographically and has participated in European political, economic, and legal integration since 1986. Madrid is its capital and political-administrative centre. Under the 1978 Constitution, adopted during Spain’s transition from Franco’s authoritarian rule to democracy, the country is a social and democratic state governed by the rule of law and organised as a parliamentary monarchy, with freedom, justice, equality, and political pluralism recognised as fundamental legal values. In recent decades, Spain has strengthened its democratic institutions, engaged with European human rights mechanisms, embraced cultural diversity, and consolidated the rule of law. Nevertheless, migrant and asylum-seeker rights, border-management practices, and responses to regional identity claims and demands for greater autonomy remain key human rights concerns. |
